- Oct 15 – Jingli will prepare a chart to support the discussion of “how to improve outreach to missions”. The chart will contain info about upcoming missions and their launch dates, time range when info about standards will be helpful, and points of contact for mission. This chart will be used at the oct meeting.
Notes/Discussion:
- Rich talked to Matt Schwaller about the GPM interest in submitting an RFC for a precipitation product. Matt asked Rich to talk to Erich Stocker. Erich thinks that a precipitation product definition is outside the data systems standards area and a science topic.
- Status of process revision for defacto standards – Allan – this process revision is for standards that are in widespread use and mature. Tiger team discussed the name – came up with “established practices”. Need to make sure that the criteria and explanation for it does not imply that these standards that are identified as “established practices” by the SPG are less important than the Recommended Standards. Allan will put together a revised process briefing package before the Oct meeting.
- AURA Guidelines Initial Review – Jingli, Gi-Kong, and Ananth all think that the document is ready to move to the next step. TWG for AURA Guidelines was constituted. The TWG will identify experts to conduct an expert technical spec review of the document. Volunteers for the TWG: Jingli, Gi-Kong, Ananth, and Glenn Cunningham. First TWG telecon is Wed Oct 17th at 3pm ET.
- DAP 2 Revisions – Allan – Rev 9 of the DAP 2 spec has a good size list of changes but the changes are editorial. Need to welcome new versions of the spec when the specs get refined or improved. Rich asked why James decided to revise the spec. James was getting a lot of questions from implementers using the spec for new implementations. The revisions to the spec provide clarifications for implementers, in response to commonly asked questions. Does not change the tech content of the spec nor would the new version change any existing software implementations.
- The SPG agreed by unanimous consent to accept version 9 of the DAP 2 spec. Ananth will update the SPG website.
- HDF5 status – Rich has not heard back from Martha on the SPG recommendation to endorse HDF5 as a Recommended Standard.
- HDF-EOS5 – Helen – we have 9 or 10 operational readiness reviews. The TWG needs to agree on final disposition of comments. One question from reviewers comments – what is the future NASA support for HDF-EOS5? Rich talked to Dan Marinelli who said that the ESDIS project will continue to support HDF-EOS5 to the level necessary. In the current Raytheon contract, Raytheon is required to support it. The current contract will be extended to 2009. HDF Group has a grant to support HDF. Grant is expected to be renewed. No formal process at this point of when the HDF-EOS5 support will transition from Raytheon to the HDF Group but it should happen in the future.
- Oceans discussion – Daniel – We will have a talk at the Oct meeting about IOOS DMAC and how SPG and DMAC could collaborate. Julie Bosch is planning on attending the Oct meeting if she can get travel funding. She will send a representative otherwise. Russ Rew is sending Ed Hartnett to give a talk on NetCDF4. Daniel is also talking to 2 other ;potential speakers. So we have 2 confirmed oceans talks and 2 potential. Daniel will firm up by end of week or as soon as possible.
- Joint WG session in Oct – Ming reported on the telecon to discuss this. Every working group will have 45 min timeslot – 30 min for talk and 15 min for discussion. SPG could give a talk on Standards Life Cycle (10 min) and the Process changes (20 min).
- Oct meeting planning – Rich will give the SIF talk. Siri Jodha will help prepare materials for the talk. Siri Jodha will not attend the oct meeting due to a conflict. Rich will ask Frank Lindsay to give a talk on the US GEO Standards. Ted Habermann agreed to give a talk on the Standards Lifecyle Model. Jingli will prepare a chart to support the discussion of “how to improve outreach to missions”. The chart will contain info about upcoming missions and their launch dates, time range when info about standards will be helpful, and points of contact for mission. This chart will be used at the oct meeting.
