Notes/Discussion:
- Reviewed the speaker list for the July 15 meeting. Rich will confirm with Bob Schweiss for his NPP talk. Daniel will confirm with Ann Ball or Julie Bosch about a IOOS DMAC talk. Daniel will give a talk on the collaboration document.
- Future CF RFC – Ed Armstrong sent message several months ago to the CF community email list, asking for interest in submitting CF as an RFC. No one responded. However, Unidata is receiving new funding from NSF to actively support CF This may be a good time to talk to someone there about submitting CF as a potential standard. We will wait until the NetCDF RFC is further down the process before approaching Russ Rew (Unidata) about a CF RFC.
- Please register for the ESIP Fed meeting and make your hotel reservations. Many SPG members are reserving at the Holiday Inn Express because it’s closer to the meeting venue.
- Music night at SPG meeting – Helen has researched this. There are couple of very good options.
- Status of RFCs –
- Backtrack – Ananth – ECHO will submit their review of Backtrack sometime next week. He has given up on the NOAA reviewers because of lack of response.
- AURA – Helen – Cheryl sent the final copy of AURA Guidelines. Helen needs to update the header to reflect the RFC number and also to write a recommendation to accept the AURA Guidelines as a Tech Note.
- Making of the AURA Guidelines Tech Note – Peter needs authorization from his senior management. While Rich can’t legally request that Peter write this RFC, he can talk to Curt and let him know that this work would be valued and appreciated.
- NetCDF – Daniel is expecting to receive the first draft of this RFC by COB today from Russ Rew. After Daniel reviews this RFC and if he thinks it’s ready for an SPG Initial Review – he will send the RFC to the SPG email list. Volunteers to do the Initial Review: Ananth, Siri Jodha, Helen.
- DIF RFC – John got the initial draft of this RFC on Monday this week. After he reviews this and if he determines that the RFC is ready for an SPG Initial Review, he will send to the SPG email list. Volunteers to review the DIF RFC: Allan, Yonsook, Helen
- HDF-DAP2 Mappping Tech Note – Allan said that Kent Yang from the HDF Group has been assigned to write this Tech Note with co-author James Gallagher. No schedule yet.
- Tech Infusion “Practical Guidelines to…” documents – Siri Jodha mentioned that the Practical Guidelines to Interoperability seems to be mis-named. It’s mostly a document about file formats and tools for the file formats. Rich noted that the WGs need to work with each other so the SPG website could at least have a pointer to the Tech Infusion website wherever the docs are posted. However, we will not use the exact title of the documents but refer to the documents in a general way.
- SPG website update – Ananth – ESDS group lost their domain name, esdswg.org because someone forgot to pay the annual registration fee for the domain name. Then someone from Eastern Europe grabbed this domain name but will sell it back for a high price. Allan noted that Steve Olding also owns the esdswg.net domain name. This would be preferable than the esdswg.com domain that Steve also owns. Ananth will contact Steve and ask if we could all use the .net domain instead of the .com domain.
- Oceans Outreach status – Daniel – 2 weeks ago, Daniel and Rich attended the IOOS DMAC Steering Team meeting. Rich gave a talk on the SPG while Daniel gave a talk on the SPG/IOOS collaboration document. Daniel is still discussing with Ann on what the next steps should be.
- Siri Jodha agreed to cover the points listed in the GEOSS SIF session in July :
- What does it mean if a standard shows up in the standards registry?
- What kind of vetting/review has taken place?
- Is there proof of at least 2 implementations?
- Is there info on how widely used (or not widely used) the standard is
- How does the SIF work with the regional SIFs?
- Discussion – how should the SPG identify the vetted, widely used standards in the standards registry for potential SPG adoption of the standard?
- What does it mean if a standard shows up in the standards registry?
