- Dec 17 – ALL – think about ideas for an SPG newsletter that gets sent to the spg-announce email list couple times a year or whenever appropriate.
- Jan 31 – Ananth Rao will revise SPG website to clearly show which standards are endorsed and which ones are still pending.
Notes/Discussion:
- Rich provided a brief recap of the ESDSWG meetings in Oct and the SPG breakouts.
- KML sessions were interesting and will generate 2 RFCs.
- 2 RFCs coming out from the Oct meeting – Karl Benedict will write a Tech Note, “Time Enabled KML”, and Ken Keiser will write one on the GeoRSS and Atom.
- Next EDSWG meeting – we will need a joint session with the metrics group to discuss how we measure and document the standards being used.
- Had a good discussion with Frank Lindsay about how HQ can encourage the use of SPG endorsed standards. An evaluation criteria for RFP responses that gives preference for proposals that use SPG endorsed standards will be very beneficial. Frank will work towards that. Frank Lindsay suggested that the SPG should update group website to clearly show which standards and endorsed and which ones are still pending. He can then point to our website in RFPs, etc. to give instruction that use of endorsed standards will be positive for the proposals.
- We will hold a web services workshop in 2009 – perhaps in the summer? This is in response to direction from Martha Maiden at the Oct ESDSWG meeting to spend time on Web Services.
- SPG will not review reference standards – we can’t judge operational readiness so will not review.
- Siri Jodha gave an update on the GEOSS SIF activities.
- Allan will check on the status of the HDF5 to DAP2 mapping RFC.
- Status of RFCs –
- NetCDF – sent out review questions. End of Oct, we had 20 reviews returned. So far, mostly positive. One repeated comment is that CF is useful with NetCDF. Need to get SWAL for NetCDF written. We will review the SWAL at the next SPG telecon.
- DIF – review SWAL that Allan sent to the SPG email list. SPG agreed to recommend endorsement of the DIF RFC as a Recommended Standard. Rich will take a look at the SWAL and will write a letter to go along with the SWAL.
- Backtrack – Ananth sent draft SWAL for Backtrack RFC (Tech Note). Rich will review and send to Frank and Martha with a letter.
- SERF RFC – John Scialdone is the editor. Need chair for the group. Will elect at the first TWG telecon. Ananth, Ed, Helen, Rich, and Allan are members of the TWG. Need to complete the Initial Reviews of the SERF RFC.
- How can we publicize the endorsed standards and tech notes? How about a newsletter? Maybe have a short newsletter that we send to the spg-announce group couple times a year? We should think about how to do this.
- Rich will co-chair a session at the spring AGU meeting – use of standards in Earth science remote sensing.
- Gao Chen may have some knowledge of which science groups to target for outreach. H will help develop ideas for outreach.
