Notes/Discussion:

  • Fred Patt, the Aquarius data systems manager, was an invited guest at the SPG telecon. Fred gave an overview of the Aquarius mission and planned data system. Aquarius products will build on SeaWIFS heritage. Will probably migrate from HDF4 to HDF5 for heritage SeaWIFS. The decision has not yet been made definitively but there are plans to. Peter Leonard asked to see some product samples of L1b/L2 and L3 products for Aquarius. The SeaWIFS heritage data distributed by SeaWIFS group but the Aquarius products will be distributed by PODAAC.
  • Ed reported on the status of the NetCDF RFC. We have received 19 reviews with 18 positive. He sent out a summary of all the reviews to the SPG email list before the telecon. Ed will produce a SWAL and send to the email list by Jan 7.
  • Allan reported on the SERF RFC. The TWG has mapped out the review process and schedule. Hope to complete the reviews by the end of March.
  • Daniel talked to Gao Chen about documenting the ICARTT format as a future RFC.
  • Ananth asked if anyone had any comments about the 1 page flyer about the SPG? Please send him any comments ASAP.
  • Daniel attended the IOOS DMAC meeting earlier this week. He plans to have bi-monthly telecons with the IOOS DMAC to continue the collaboration. We did get couple of reviewers from IOOS DMAC for the NetCDF RFC. At their meeting, DMAC did approve CF and Thredds aggregation as standards.
  • Glenn will spear head the production of an SPG newsletter. The purpose of the newsletter is to raise awareness of the SPG. The main audience for the newsletter is the spg-announce email list. We could also bring copies of the newsletter along with the 1 page flyer to any meetings members are attending. In the first newsletter, we should introduce ourselves, describe the SPG website, list the endorsed and pending RFCs, and promote involvement.
  • Rich discussed the spring AGU meeting. Rich will be co-chair of a session whose focus is the use of standards. Abstracts are due Feb 16 by invited authors and by March 4 for unsolicited abstracts. Should we invite a talk by Frank and Martha? The focus of their talk could be how HQ is strengthening the endorsement process of the standards. Rich will call Martha and Frank and discuss. Rich welcomes any other ideas for invited talks.
