Notes/Discussion:
- Rich noted that Elena Pourmal will be at the July SPG meeting.
- Who is coming to SPG meeting – Ed Armstrong, Sam Bacharach, Chris Helm, Jingli Yang, Helen Conover, Ananth Rao, Allan Doyle, Yonsook Enloe, Rich Ullman……any others?
- Allan gave the WMS RFC-006 status. We have received 4 reviews during the operational review phase. Only 1 out of the 4 were from a NASA related system and it was semi-operational. The operational review has been extended to May 31st and the WMS TWG members are actively soliciting additional operational reviews. If we don’t get enough positive operational reviews, then the RFC-006 will be approved as a Tech Note, not a NASA community standard.
- Sam asked what “operational” means. After discussion, it was agreed that it means that it’s being used with NASA data and is used to either distribute significant amount of data or information or used to support a significant number of users; i.e. large number of transactions are involved on a regular basis.
- Sam will call people from the evidence of implementation list and ask them to do an operational review.
- Siri Jodha noted that Jeanne Behnke asked the DAAC managers to send in reviews for the WMS and also for the HDF specs. Not sure why the DAAC managers have not sent anything in.
- Rich talked with the GeoTIFF spec author to invite her to the July SPG meeting. While she is not coming to the meeting, he did find out the status of the GeoTIFF RFC. They are getting the document together. Allan noted that it is not a deadline oriented activity. They are converting the html pages where the GeoTIFF documentation resided to RFC-document input format and correcting/tweaking it as they convert the pages.
- Rich and Ming discussed news from Kathy’s monthly telecon – no list of ACCESS members yet. The Oct meeting of ES DSWG is scheduled for Oct 31 – Nov 2 at the University of Maryland conference center. Kathy will be talking to the HQ to see if the Oct meeting can include HQ studies managers to discuss the ES DS working groups. Rich will send out Kathy’s 2005 (calendar year) year end report to the SPG email list. Ideas for keynote speakers for the Oct meeting are welcomed. One idea is the Univ of Maryland geography department new inductee to the National Academy of Science. Another idea – the new incoming NASA CIO?
- Goals of the SPG this year – this will be discussed at the July meeting – (1) inreach to NASA HQ management (2) work the RFCs in the standards process (3) continue the community outreach.
- For the Oct ES DSWG meeting, how should SPG structure the SPG sessions with the HQ studies managers to get the best interaction? The goals of the SPG sessions with HQ studies managers are to (1) get HQ staff to see SPG as a resource; awareness thing. Want HQ staff to encourage the studies/programs to interact with SPG. (2) want the HQ studies managers to encourage the programs they fund to use the approved list of standards.
- We need 2 way interaction with the HQ studies managers in Oct. Sam suggested a series of demos/showcase, where we can demonstrate the technologies being standardized or being considered for standardization.
