Notes/Discussion:

• Rich gave the July SPG meeting recap. Discussed the potential standards that were discussed: * ESMF : potential standard but not sure if community wants to pursue external NASA standardization. ESMF has phased deployment so they need to decide whether to pursue SPG standardization. We need to track this.
  • Elena Pourmal gave a talk on her HDF TWG experience. She noted that there are 2 kinds of standards reviews – a spec review and a larger community how well it works kind of review. These two types of reviews are done by two very different types of “users”
  • Martha Maiden discussed the process at HQ. She is trying to form a steering committee at HQ. The steering committee process will be a more formal way to get a recommendation approved. This is something we should also discuss at the Nov meeting.
• SPG should draft recommended changes to the SPG process. Then discuss potential changes to the process at the Nov meeting. Put the process discussion early so that we don’t run out of time to discuss it.
• HQ interaction question – Rich is trying to encourage members of the HQ steering committee to attend the Nov meeting. Rich is talking to Martha about this.
• Another SPG session topic for the Nov meeting is the working relation between NASA Ames and Google Earth. Rich and Yonsook talked to Chris Kemp about attending the Nov meeting.
• Getting speakers to discuss future potential standards are not a priority at the Nov meeting.
• Nov meeting will be 3 days total. Combination of ESDWG Plenary, joint working group session, and then separate WG breakouts. Will end by Thurs mid day.
• RFC Status – WMS RFC has no change
• Helen reported on the HDF TWG. HDF TWG needs to analyze the current reviews received. The TWG plans to meet to discuss the reviews received.
• Jingli said she is waiting to hear back from Cheryl Craig on the AURA Profile.
• Yonsook discussed the future SPG abstract for the fall AGU meeting. Should target one of the ESSI sessions.
